Zappe, Pats tame high-powered Lions

By Karver Jordan, Class of 2024

The Patriots were at home this weekend vs. the Lions and played a great game in their red throwbacks. The Patriots won, 29-0, shutting out the best offense in the league by limiting Jared Goff and Lions’ explosive passing game. The Patriots’ offense was explosive, led by rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe.

The Patriot's offense was very entertaining this weekend. Zappe completed 17 out of 21 pass attempts with 181 yards with a touchdown and interception. Jacobi Meyers got 7 of those passes for 111 yards and a touchdown. Rookie Tyquan Thornton saw the field on 25 snaps and got 2 catches for 7 yards. The offensive line was amazing in the passing game and in the run game. Damien Harris left the game in the second quarter, so Rhamondre Stevenson had to carry the rock for the rest of the game. He finished with 25 carries for 161 yards—an average of 6.4 yards a carry. It was a career day for the running back. I would expect the Patriots to lean on Stevenson in the future. Moving onto the Browns, who the Patriots play this Sunday, I would expect a huge rushing attack on them.

Mac Jones may be in the quarterback position this week. He will try to practice as he recovers from a severe high ankle sprain suffered in Week 3 against the Ravens. From what I’m hearing, there are a lot of other news reporters making hypotheses on a quarterback battle between Jones and Zappe. People are comparing this to Drew Bledsoe and Tom Brady. Bledsoe got hurt and Brady stepped up and led the team to the championship. Does Zappe have the same chance? We ahall see what coach Bill Belichick does.

The defense of the Patriots was unstoppable against the Lions. The No. 1 scoring offense couldn’t score against the Patriots. The Lions scored 35 points on average going into the game. I would expect the Patriots’ defense to continue doing its thing and stop the rushing attack the Browns have. Kyle Dugger got a defensive touchdown after the Matt Judon sack on Goff. This was a turning point for the defense of the Patriots and the Lions were confused. The Lions went for it on 4th down 6 times during the game and converted none. The Patriots will play the Browns on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Go, Patriots!
