Patriots weigh options at QB

Updated: Sep 30, 2022

Patriots quarterback Mac Jones, the second-year player, went down with a injury in the loss against the Ravens last Sunday. This injury is a huge loss to the Patriots team and quarterback room. Jones is expected to miss 6-8 weeks, so that leaves us wondering who will step up and play quarterback for the Patriots.

Will the Patriots lean on veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer, the 14-year journeyman quarterback? Will they lean on the rookie coming out of the draft, Bailey Zappe? Hoyer is expected to start this week vs. the Packers as of Tuesday (Sept. 27). Hoyer has been a backup for most of his 14-year career. In 14 seasons he has recorded a completion percentage of 59.3 with 10,631 yards and 53 touchdowns and 35 interception. Overall, what we would expect from a backup quarterback for most of his career? Zappe performed really well in the preseason. Zappe had one of the best quarterback seasons of all time in college history with Western Kentucky, recording 5,967 yards and 62 touchdown to 11 interception.

Last year Mac Jones was the best in preseason and regular season among rookies. Zappe started off slow as expected for a 4th round draft pick during the preseason. His best game came against the Giants, going 19 for 32 for 205 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Overall, a good night for the young player 75.6 passer rating. Zappe performed the best out of any of the rookie quarterback in the preseason.

Will the patriots shock us in going elsewhere for the quarterback position? Cam Newton is a free agent and looking for a team to sign with. Do the Patriots sign him for a second chance? Will this be Cam Newton’s last chance in the NFL? Another idea the patriots could do is trade for a veteran. Andy Dalton has been reported to be a player on the trade block for the Saints. What would the Patriots give up to pick him up if needed? Will the Patriots add a young quarterback to the practice squad? The Patriots will continue to evaluate Jones and the whole situation.

This whole situation will leave us fans wondering what will the Patriots do to help fix the situation? Moving forward we, as fans, will have to stand with the Patriots organization and hope for the best.
